SPECIAL REPORT:
Noah Kahan – Noveau-Folk Superstar? Or DECEPTI-KAHAN?
Originally, this idea started as a webcomic riff on 60 Minutes. I love the simplicity of a milquetoast, straight-laced interviewer talking to some extravagant character. I think it's emblematic of an era of more intense and honest journalism, but it's also a comic artist's dream: simple backgrounds and a focus on character.
Let me just say, I love Noah Kahan. That might reveal my ultra-cheugy millenial tendencies, but man, I think he really knows his was around making some heartfelt indie folk-pop tracks that a white boy can really polish off some beers and get lost in his feels to. So, Mr. Kahan's legal team, if you're reading this, please, it's all in good fun, and I really mean no ill will, even if I am blowing your cover as an interstellar automobile shapeshifting robot.
Anwyays, whilst on a camping trip a few months back, around the release of The Great Divide, I listened to the album a few times through while making s'mores around the campfire. And I noticed, man, this guy mentions cars & driving in almost every song. The highest form of humor (in my opinion) is finding ways to ham-fistedly combine words together into awkward-to-say portmanteaus. For the uninitiated, Noah Kahan's last name is pronounced just "con", though many people assume the "h" is hit much harder, thus, "Ka-han".
Therefore, the bad joke of "Decepti-Kahan" works perfectly. And it only took me months of conception (plus procrastinating) multiple days of digital illustration, and a 4 paragraph blog post to bring this joke to fruition!
As always, thanks for reading, and I hope you've enjoyed this post. If you have been living under a rock and haven't listened to Noah Kahan's music, you totally should! His new album is great, and even after a stellar release of Stick Season, I think The Great Divide is even better! "Dashboard" is my personal favorite, but don't overlook his earlier work, namely his vocal work on "Need Your Love" with Gryffin & Seven Lions for my fellow EDM fans.
Toodles!
